This highly interactive workshop, facilitated by a past college board chair and past college president is designed for board members and senior college administrators to provide a greater understanding of good governance principles and concepts and roles and responsibilities of board members. Participants will have the opportunity to engage and learn from each other and have a greater appreciation of the perspectives and value each governor brings to the governing process.

New board members and board staff will want to make a contribution to the vibrancy of their boards. This session will be an opportunity for each person to reflect on learnings from the good governance workshop and to strategize on how to contribute to -- or facilitate -- a healthy and smart dialogue at board meetings. It will be an opportunity for each person to initiate his/her personal governance professional development plan and discuss his/her legacy to their college's board.

9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Introduction to Risk Management (Part One) -
College Centre of Board Excellence

This session will be offered in-person from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Sunday morning, November 17, 2013 as a pre-conference session just before the opening of the Higher Education Summit at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, Toronto. It will also be delivered via webinar in January 2014 (dates TBC).

External experts will look at what enterprise risk management (ERM) means for the college system, the role of boards vs management in ERM and the information boards need to accomplish ERM oversight. Legal obligations of a board relating to risk management will be discussed.

Part two of the Introduction to Risk Management will be offered as a webinar in February. A third session on risk management, Implementing Enterprise Risk Management will be an all-day session held in April 2014 (exact date TBC). It is recommended, but not mandatory, that interested delegates complete Introduction to Risk Management part one and part two before attending the session on implementing ERM.

8 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Board chairs' and vice-chairs' meeting
Breakfast at 7:30 a.m.

The purpose of this meeting is to provide a forum for these representatives to discuss issues of current concern. An agenda for the meeting will be distributed to board chairs and vice-chairs once approved by the Governors' Affairs Committee.

8:30 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. President and board executive assistants' workshop
9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Committee of Presidents' meeting
11:40 a.m. - 12:40 p.m. Student Governors' Network

The purpose of this session is to provide new and returning college student board governors with an opportunity for interactive discussion with their peers from other colleges.
